Alright so I finally decided to start up my own blog to write about whatever stuff/highlights/thoughts I'm going to have while I'm away.
Its a bit of a truism that you get out what you put in. What does that mean about the relationships that we have with one another? You might be half way across the world in a completely different time zone, and MSN would allow you guys instantaneous communication. All in the comfort of your room, or hotel. Not just that, but you could be checking your email, chatting to 5 other people, and surfing the Net all at the same time.
Can you imagine how it would have been only 30/40 years ago? The only way we could stay in touch would be for people to actually take out a notepad, write with a pen, and post the letter at a post office. I can't help but think that because relationships are harder to maintain, they are also held much higher in regard by both parties.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but I was quite reluctant on setting up a blog. Its just another symptom of my aversion to technology. Technology be it the internet, email, mobile phones has really changed the way society works and the way we relate to one another. It makes it so easy to get in touch, to arrange things, to be friends. I honestly feel that all technology does is give us an illusion of proximity to one another. It brings people together, but the ties that bind are only stick thin.
Facebook is probably the classic example of this. I have a few hundred friends on Facebook. However, most of these people wouldn't know my favourite colour let alone my birthday. Some won't even know how many siblings I have or where I live. Most of my "friends" on Facebook can most probably say the same about me.
Hence, my aversion to technology. I can't help but think that blogging is just another way for us to keep in touch with one another in a McWorld thats not just about fast food, but fast friends too. Instead of writing an email, opening a chat box, and asking me how I'm doing, you can log on to my stupid blog anytime, anywhere and get your own little 2 minutes of Wayne.
That said, if you can't them, join them. I do have a mobile phone, I do have a Facebook. I guess it was inevitable that I would start a blog while I'm overseas to stay in touch. If not for you, I think this blog will be good for me to reflect on things that I have been reflecting on. However, I'll do my best to write interesting posts about whats been happening wherever I am.
Would you like fries with that?
